Bloom Herbal Studies
Medicinal plant study ~ A gateway to nature
During this year-long program, young herb enthusiasts will develop an experiential, seasonal understanding of the wild medicinal and edible plants and trees growing around us. Nature will provide the classroom – we will meet outdoors, embracing the elements and seasons. We will visit various parks in HRM including Point Pleasant, Fort Needham, Seaview Park look-off, Withrod Lake, Frog Pond, The Dingle & Flinn Park
We will meet one Sunday per month, from September until June. The course is will be broken into three semesters:
Fall: September – November,
Spring: April -June
Two age groups:
Group 1: 5-8 yrs. old and Group 2: 9-12 yrs. old
Group 1: 9-10:30 a.m. Group 2: 10:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
Payment: $80 + tax ($92) per semester, non-refundable
Classes limited to 12, classes will fill up.

~ identification of at least 75 wild medicinal, edible plants and trees
~ in each class we will brew a herbal tea with the plants we encounter
~ botany and life cycle of plants
~ seeds, roots, leaves, flowers, fruits, barks, saps – their uses as food and medicine
~ herbal crafts, storytelling, herb bundles & amulets
~ 4 elements – wind, fire, water, earth
~ ecosystems and interactions with the creatures living among the plants
Course designed and delivered by herbalist Savayda Jarone, who acknowledges children’s innate connection to nature and the power of herbs and trees to deepen that relationship.
Savayda will be assisted by Viviane Kavenaugh, who completed the children’s program many years ago, and who endeavours to become a herbalist.
This will be the eighth year of this popular program. Begins September 2021
